The mind-body connection

Mind body connection and gut health London

Did you know…

…that the gut and brain are constantly communicating to each other via a connection called the gut-brain axis? This powerful two-way communication pathway is via a nerve called the ‘vagus nerve’ and is why sometimes when stressed, this can impact on the functioning of your gut.

Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS):

  • Called our “rest and digest” nervous system

  • Switched on when calm and relaxed

Sympathetic nervous system (SNS):

  • Called our “fight or flight” nervous system

  • Switched on in the presence of a stressor e.g. running from a wild animal

Improving gut health definitely has something to do with what you put into your body, but that’s not the only part of the puzzle. Your lifestyle, busy days, stress or anxiety can also impact the way the gut behaves.

Our method

In our clinic, we focus not only on diet, but implement lifestyle strategies to target the brain end of the gut-brain connection. This includes practices such as yoga, meditation, and breath work. We now have sound scientific evidence that these practices can have a huge impact on gut health, as well as mental health. If you know how to implement these alongside dietary changes, just think how much of an improvement you can make to your overall health!
